One day, my longest/best friend Jake Brown sent me a ridiculous selfie of him making a stupid face. So instead of just having a laugh and moving on, I quickly retrieved the largest canvas I had on hand and sketched out the image he sent. From there, I used some ink to do an underpainting and some different shades of grey colored pencil to achieve a haunting image. This portrait hangs in his home today and I could not be more proud. Thanks Jake.
My daughter Victoria has always been a wonderful inspiration. This mixed media attempt was my first adventure with acrylics. On a large canvas I painted with ink for an underpainting, then proceeded to paint using acrylics and added detail using colored pencil. This painting continues to hang in our living room today.
This birthday gift for my daughter was so much fun to do. Exclusively drawn with Prismacolor colored pencils, I reimagined my daughter Victoria as a cartoon character. Along side her I drew her favorite animated characters from that year.
For my second attempt at painting in Photoshop I thought that I might as well continue combining a former U.S. president with an animal. Although choosing JFK was random, morphing his image with a Boston Terrier was a more conscience decision. I may decide to do more of these mash-ups in the future due to how much fun they are.
This was my first complete image I’ve ever done digitally. Using Photoshop, I was able to quickly paint my idea of Teddy Roosevelt as an actual bear. Using reference photos of candid bear shots as well as numerous historical photos of Teddy, I was able to have a lot of fun painting this image.
My wife is a big fan of the musician St. Vincent. Being that my wife is the reason I got back in to creating art, I figured I would honor her by recreating the indie musician using pen and ink. I really wanted to see what I could do by restricting myself to just 3 colors (black, white, and red) and only using pen. It was both very challenging and enjoyable.
I was approached by a local company to produce this image. This creative team provided me with exactly what they wanted in the illustration from the black and white fish to the colorful bowties that amplified the contrast. It was a wonderful opportunity.
For this drawing, nothing was really planned out at all. I simply wanted to make a black and white pen and ink image that had a minimalist but abstract feel to it. The choice of using actor John Hurt was just the first thing I thought of when picking a subject.
This commission was a real treat. The newlywed couple were not only easy on the eyes but also gave me some creative flexibility. This image was created with acrylic paint, colored pencil, and a little ink on 8” x 10” mixed media paper.
Commissioned portrait for a lady of her and her father. Colored pencil on 9”x13” paper.
My youngest daughter Violet needed a portrait of her own so she wouldn’t feel left out. Oil pastel on 24”x36” canvas
I wanted to do something fun for my first attempt at oil painting so I chose to do a portrait of me and Rachel as the main characters from her favorite show Outlander. Oil paint on 9”x13” paper.
